Alarm over Dutton terror threat

The prime minister has reached out to Peter Dutton after revelations the opposition leader was the target of an alleged terror plot. A Brisbane schoolboy allegedly planned an attack involving the coalition leader in the first half of 2024 before being arrested in August. The 16-year-old was on Thursday committed to stand trial in Brisbane’s Supreme Court after being charged with a commonwealth offence of committing acts done “in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act”.

Security probed after teen’s hijacking, alleged bomb threat

Airport security practices are in the spotlight after a teen allegedly forced his way onto a plane with a shotgun and threatened passengers and crew, saying he had bombs in his bag. Police claim the 17-year-old climbed through a hole in a fence at Victoria’s second busiest airport and made his way to the aircraft where he allegedly told those on board he was carrying explosives.

UK High Commissioner sacked over Trump slight

New Zealand’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Phil Goff, has been sacked for questioning US President Donald Trump’s grasp of history. Goff, foreign and defence minister in Helen Clark’s government, will leave the role under orders from Foreign Minister Winston Peters. Ocean rower rescued after cyclone

A Lithuanian rower is receiving medical treatment on an Australian navy ship after being rescued from a tropical cyclone’s damaging winds and monster waves. Aurimas Mockus called for help on Friday when Tropical Cyclone Alfred proved too powerful as he was attempting to row 12,000km across the Pacific Ocean from San Diego to Brisbane.

Australia has warned airlines flying between Australian airports and New Zealand to beware of Chinese warships conducting a live-fire exercise in the Tasman Sea, Foreign Minister Penny Wong says. Australia has been monitoring the Chinese naval task group that was sailing almost 280 kilometres off Sydney in a projection of power, as experts warn the nation must invest in its maritime capabilities.
