Activists damage RAF planes

Pro-Palestinian activists have broken into a Royal Air Force base in central England, damaging and spraying red paint over two planes used for refuelling and transport.

Palestine Action said two members had entered the Brize Norton base in Oxfordshire, putting paint into the engines of the Voyager aircraft and further damaging them with crowbars.

"Despite publicly condemning the Israeli government, Britain continues to send military cargo, fly spy planes over Gaza and refuel US/Israeli fighter jets," a spokesperson for the group said in a statement, while a video of the alleged incident was posted on social media.

"Britain isn’t just complicit, it’s an active participant in the Gaza genocide and war crimes across the Middle East."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the group's actions.

"The act of vandalism committed at RAF Brize Norton is disgraceful."

"Our Armed Forces represent the very best of Britain and put their lives on the line for us every day. It is our responsibility to support those who defend us," Starmer said on social media platform X.

Britain's defence ministry condemned the "vandalism" and said it was working with police to investigate.

Defence Secretary John Healey on Friday ordered an investigation and a review of wider security at the country's military bases.

"I am really disturbed that this happened and have ordered an investigation and a review of wider security at our bases," Healey posted on X.

Police said they were investigating a report of people gaining access to the air base and causing criminal damage.

Palestine Action is among groups that have regularly targeted defence firms and other companies in Britain linked to Israel since the start of the conflict in Gaza.

The group said it had also sprayed paint on the runway and left a Palestine flag there.
