AI-powered drones are reshaping battlefield tactics

A Czech company, LPP, is producing AI-guided drones for use in the war in Ukraine.

The MTS drone is launched by human operators but once in the air an artificial intelligence system takes over, steering the drone to its target using cameras and sensors to compare terrain with maps.

LPP says the AI piloting system means the drone can navigate without being controlled from the ground and without using GPS – two things that have become increasing difficult due to signals and satellite jamming in Ukraine.

LPP says it has already sent hundreds of drone to Ukraine with plans for more.

Two children among dead in massive plant explosion

Two girls were waiting for a relative to finish work at a Nebraska biofuel plant when all three were killed in a massive explosion that shook the town, officials say. Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg said at a news conference that the children were at the Horizon Biofuels plant ahead of a doctor’s appointment, and although he wasn’t sure of their exact ages, he believed both were under age 12. Dodge County Sheriff Sergeant Brie Frank later confirmed the three were family.

Aussie rocket carrying Vegemite lifts off, then crashes

Australia, we have lift-off. An Australian-made rocket has been launched from home soil for the first time, only to crash moments later. The 14-second maiden flight in Bowen, north Queensland, was hailed a “major step” toward Australia joining a potentially lucrative global space industry. Gilmour Space Technologies on Wednesday made history with the first orbital launch attempt by a rocket designed and built in Australia.

Ants on march for biodiversity

Hairy wood ants from a forest in north-east England are going on a trip: they’re being moved some 241km (150 miles) west to another woodland in a bid boost its biodiversity. Forestry England, which manages publicly owned forests in England, says the technique, called translocation, is part of a broader strategy to restore forest ecosystems and enhance biodiversity by reintroducing these small but vital ecosystem engineers to areas where they are absent.

Putin, facing Trump deadline, signals no change in stance

Oil depot ablaze as Zelensky announces prisoner exchange

An overnight Ukrainian drone attack on an oil depot near Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi sparked a major fire, Russian officials said, as the two countries traded strikes and the Ukrainian president announced a prisoner exchange. More than 120 firefighters attempted to extinguish the blaze, sparked after debris from a downed drone struck a fuel tank, Krasnodar regional Gov. Veniamin Kondratyev said on Telegram. Videos on social media appeared to show huge pillars of smoke billowing above the oil depot.

Deadly drone strikes hit Russia

Ukrainian drone attacks overnight into Saturday killed three people, Russian officials said. Russia’s Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted or destroyed 112 drones across eight Russian regions and the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula. A drone attack on the Rostov region, on the border with Ukraine, killed one person, acting governor Yuri Slyusar said.
