Residents evacuate on landslide threat

Two homes in Lyttelton remain under threat after a landslide last night saw several people evacuated.

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) was called to the slip at 9:05pm, where they found one home had been damaged.

Two properties were identified as at risk and remain evacuated.

FENZ said everyone had been accounted for, and a geotechnical engineer would assess the properties.

Slow-speed chase: Police pursue burglar on excavator

Police in South Carolina have engaged in a not-so-hot pursuit as they chased an excavator down a main highway for more than an hour at the speed an average adult walks. The chase reached speeds of 3mph (5km/h) early on Sunday morning in North Charleston, police said. Officers on a different call saw the big piece of construction equipment with treads and a shovel in front go across US Highway 78 around 3.30am, North Charleston Police wrote in their report.

‘It’s a miracle’: Sole survivor can’t explain how he’s alive

The lone passenger who survived the Air India crash that killed 241 people onboard couldn’t believe he was alive when he opened his eyes, surrounded by flames, debris and charred bodies, saying that “it’s a miracle” that he survived. The British national of Indian origin, Viswashkumar Ramesh, was heading to London when the flight crashed minutes after taking off from India’s northwestern city of Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon.

Missing student found safe and well

Private investigators looking for an American aviation student missing from Palmerston North for more than a week say he has been found. Massey University student William Henry Johnson, known as Will, was last seen in Palmerston North between 30 May and 1 June. The 24-year-old’s last communication with family was on 5 June and he had not responded to any attempts to contact him since.
