Nine dead in Russia, Ukraine strikes

A Ukrainian drone attack has left at least seven people dead and a Russian strike on Odesa has killed two people, just hours after Kyiv and Washington signed a long-anticipated agreement granting US access to Ukraine’s mineral resources. The attack in the partially occupied Kherson region of southern Ukraine, which struck a market in the town of Oleshky, killed seven and wounded more than 20 people, Moscow-appointed Governor Vladimir Saldo said.

Voters in many areas of England are going go to the polls in local elections that provide a test of feeling about Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s centre-left Labour government, 10 months after it was elected in a landslide. Both Labour and the main opposition Conservative Party are bracing for losses in the midterm poll. The hard-right Reform UK led by Nigel Farage is fielding more candidates than any other party and hopes to make major gains in the elections for about 1600 seats on 23 local councils, six mayoralties and one seat in Parliament.

What we know about minerals deal

After months of tense negotiations, the US and Ukraine have signed a deal that is expected to give Washington access to the country’s critical minerals and other natural resources – an agreement Kyiv hopes will secure long-term support for its defence against Russia. Kyiv derides Putin’s truce offer

President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian officials have scoffed at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ceasefire announcement, with Zelensky saying it is “another attempt at manipulation”, urging for a longer one, while the Kremlin said attempts to communicate on peace with Kyiv had been ignored. Ukraine questioned why Moscow would not agree to its call for a ceasefire lasting at least 30 days and starting immediately. “We value people’s lives and not parades,“ Zelensky said. Zelensky accused Putin of trying to string along the US.
