Kiwi stuck in Turkey after fleeing from Iran
A New Zealander who was stuck in Iran has managed to escape to Turkey.
The woman was visiting Iran with her fiancée and her 60-year-old mother when the conflict broke out.
Last week, her friend Daria Carrothers said that she was travelling south from Tehran in dangerous conditions, and with limited transport options.
Carrothers said her friend told her taxis and buses were booked out and only 10 litres of petrol could be provided per car per day.
Her brother, Amir Nagh, confirmed that she has made it to Turkey, together with her mother and fiancée.
He said he last made contact with her several hours ago.
"She is having difficulty with arranging her flights back to NZ as everything is booked out," mr Nagh said.
"She managed to sort her mum a ticket to depart tomorrow, but her and her fiancée are currently working through their tickets with the airline," he said.
Nagh said he only got to talk to his sister via messaging.
"We didn't have time to celebrate, it was straight into action on her whereabouts, what she needs, sorting how to get money to her, what flights she will return on, sending her virtual copies of all her legal documents," he said
Nagh said while he's relieved his sister has made it out of Iran, "the joy hasn't set in yet," as her journey had not been completed.
"Turkey is overwhelmed with the number of Iranians and everything is proving to be difficult: booking flights, accommodation, and getting money to her," he said.
Nagh said it was "soul crushing" that he still had many other family members stranded in Iran.
"Every single one of them left the city of Tehran at a moments notice and have no idea when they'll return," he said.
119 New Zealanders were currently registered as being in Iran, as a defence force hercules is on route to an undisclosed location in the Middle East, to help evacuate New Zealanders from the conflict zone if it's able to.
